Leadmare was first published on the web in January, 2000 with
a goal of bringing together the best of the many horse websites
on the Internet. There were (and still are) the sites that are
purely informative, purely community-driven, or purely fun and
games. Leadmare is a combination of all of these qualities,
catering to all crowds of horse lovers.
Why the name "Leadmare"?
Wild herds consist of a stallion and his band of mares. The
stallion is the top authority, but the lead mare is second-in-command,
keeping the members of the herd under control or taking over
when the stallion goes off on his own. She is the smartest mare,
the one that all the other horses respect. Strong and dominant,
yet wise, she answers only to the head stallion, who entrusts
her with the responsibility of keeping the herd together.
This description of the lead mare seems to fit very well with
the overal goal of our site: to be the ultimate horse resource
on the net. So far, it's done us well.
Who's behind the site?
The site's design and much of the content is maintained by
Allie Eissler,
but Leadmare relies on feedback and contributions from visitors
and the volunteer staff of writers. We like to think of LM as
being very user-driven. Nomatter what goes on behind the scenes,
the visitors make the site.
