First off you should establish a routine, horses are animals of habit and they will anticipate meal times according to the clock. It is ideal to feed three to four times a day but is sometimes difficult under certain circumstances such as school or job. You need to feed at least every morning and every evening. And ensure that the horse has grass to graze and/or some other kind of bulk food in a hay net or manger if he is stabled, or in a feeding bin if he is in a paddock. Mix the feed in a suitable container before taking it to your horse. Keep a suitable scoop in the feed room having established what each scoop weighs and how many scoops you should give. Mix everything together and moisten slightly if giving dry foods, particularly if fine bran is included. Make sure the horse has drunk water before you feed, then top off all water buckets or troughs in the stable or paddock before you leave. Never feed a horse before or after exercise, wait at least an hour before riding and cool him down by walking for a short bit after a hard ride-- feel under his chest to ensure he is know longer hot before feeding him.
