Always check your tack before you head off to the trails. No one wants to slip off their horse half way through the ride only to find out their girth was too loose.
Avoid riding alone. If you have even a minor accident and you're alone, what started out as a nice ride could end up being a serious or life threatening ordeal.
Make sure you wear boots with a small heal, this will prevent your foot from slipping through the stirrup and getting caught.
Always wear a helmet. A riding helmet can provide protection in the event of a fall, but you could also encounter a tree branch or other hazards and you'll be glad you had your hard hat on.
Avoid wearing a backpack, instead use a fanny pack or a saddle bags. Backpacks can easily get caught on tree braches and pull you off.
If it is warm weather, use a fly spray on your horse and bring an insect repellent for yourself. You ride will be a lot more enjoyable without bugs flying around you.
Bringing Things like sunscreen, water, a pocket knife, a small first aid kit and a hoof pick in your fanny pack incase of emergency's.
